Description Gryllida 2014-09-04 02:56:33 UTC
I'd like {{Special:Watchlist}} and {{Special:MyContributions}} to include my watchlist and contributions lists — for use on my userpage. I understand that someone else viewing it would see ''their own'' watchlist on it, but I'm not sure how to approach this.

Currently they just include a link to the relevant special pages instead. This is helpful, but not entirely as helpful as I'd like.

It'd be nice for me to have all useful stuff on my user page after all. In 2 columns, for instance.

Watchlist is traditionally considered private. Well at the moment special page transclusions make the page be "per-user" (for non-anons), I'm not really a fan of allowing transclusion of any special page that is "private" per user.

{{Special:MyContributions}} I have less reservations about since its not "secret", but I still not really a fan of adding new abilities to have per user page content.

Note, you should be able to do things like {{Special:Contributions/Grylida}} if you so desire.

Useful for what? You have a link to your contributions and your watchlist from the top of any page when logged in. User pages are traditionally used as a user profile or scratchpad and we have designated Special pages (Special:Contributions and Special:Watchlist) for dynamic views.

What's the use-case for transcluding your private watchlist? Wouldn't you instead want to use categories and Special:RecentChangesLinked or similar? Or perhaps even Special:Tags?
Comment 3 Gryllida 2014-09-04 05:48:25 UTC
The use-case is a personal place with useful links - a dashboard of sorts, containing watchlist, contributions, links from sidebar and the personal bar in one place. Its layout should be editable using wiki markup. Then I can visit the dashboard a few times during the day, such as to edit settings or visit recent changes, - and I wouldn't have to waste time visiting the watchlist page (specifically to find fresh edits of interest) or contributions page (specifically to find recent pages I edited). I think such design would be more ergonomic.

If you have concerns with such items being public viewable, it probably should be at Special:Dashboard then? I'm not sure how to retain consistency with how mediawiki usually works (special pages usually aren't editable by wiki markup and, as you say, private pages usually don't get transcluded).

This is all doable using JavaScript, but I'd like to have this use-case addressed without JavaScript, too.
