Which MediaWiki version is this about?
Have you tried out ElasticSearch already?

MW 1.22 - If I eneable "Search suggest" I expect it to work ;) Will disable it.

Shouldn't https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgEnableOpenSearchSuggest  read a note that doesn't work properly without further extensions?

Sorry, thought this bug is about a related problem I have: Only some characters show proper results. "ri" returns nothing for example.
