This might be related to bug 72006 (but probably not?).

A normal, successful edit to an explanatory footnote produced a strange display, as shown at http://imgur.com/a/6Yvgm.  

The footnote used the form {{#tag:ref|Text here|group = N}}

This is bug 49784 sadly. :-(
