Notice the Edit comment box's textarea is empty with no space taken up for the whitespace characters.
Confirmed - a Comment with white spaces can be saved. Generally - it is not possible to create an empty comment - if all text is deleted from the comment - it cannot be saved - leading and trailing white spaces are not preserved upon saving If you re-open the saved Comment with white spaces and click Done - the comment will be recognized as an empty comment and deleted.
