The commons favicon shows up as a blank file in both Safari & Chrome. Additionally, the version which shows up in other browsers is not transparent & horizontally stretched. See also http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Administrators%27_noticeboard#Favicon. Could we maybe declare the favicon as proposed in bug https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17980 ? This would allow for a PNG with a proper alpha channel, while IE users would still see the normal one.

Attached two possiple png favicons. Not yet optimized though
affected are all webkit browser under mac os x 10.*

The favicon.ico file should be a 16x16 unanimated icon. It should be as light as possible. Actual icons are 300bytes to 1500bytes.
