The red light besides "my notifications" (with the number of them) is such an eye-sore that makes the feature useless, as one is compelled to click it to get rid of it even if not intending to read the notifications, so that one doesn't know if there are unread notifications or not. Tested with one-digit notifications number on mediawiki.org; I hope it doesn't get bigger with bigger numbers (I had four-digits new messages number till a few weeks ago).
There's a new version in gerrit that's a simpler red square, but I'm not sure if it addresses your criticism or not.
Gerrit change #31997 - this icon is in core

Wow, that looks awful. Hopefully the new icon is easier on the eyes as it doesn't depend as much on the CSS rendering capabilities of the browser.
Created attachment 11321 [details] new badge icon Here's the new badge, displayed in both Echo and PageTriage.
Comment on attachment 11320 [details] The red icon What is with teh font and general dimensions of your browser? Everything looks distorted?

@Nemo: Is the new version of the notification icon an improvement or is it still an eyesore? In other words, can we close this bug?
