MediaWiki 1.23wmf2 on the English Wikipedia, from discussion at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Second_class_citizens If JavaScript is disabled in the browser (or the browser does not support JavaScript), new talk page messages do not cause a "you have new messages" notification to appear. The usual red "1" does appear, but is small enough to be easily missed (and also appears for less important notifications). This only applies to the new talk notification used with Echo. The classic "Orange Bar Of Doom" seen by IP address users works fine without JavaScript. Should it be technically difficult to implement the new talk notification without JavaScript, my next preference would be for an alternative that fulfils the same purpose even if visually different. (Could be the classic OBOD or something else.)
Confirming. Ideally we should replicate the new style bar without JavaScript (not sure how complicated that is), but worst case fallback to the OBOD :(
