Currently, spaces before double punctuation marks are all parsed as non-breaking spaces (“   ”). Actually, french punctuation is a little more subtle than that. In fact, spaces before following marks: * ; * ? * ! (not including colon) should be non-breaking thin spaces (“   ”). See [[fr:Wikipédia:Conventions_typographiques#cite_note-18]].

(In reply to comment #1) Unfortunately, the thin space appears to be replaced by an unsightly « ▯ » in some browsers. (Especially the Wii U won’t display it correctly.) I don’t know whether this is due to the font or to the browser, but it seems to be a vetoing issue.
