This doesn't seem to be the case for me anymore. Fixed, perhaps?
Did a check again and it appears that the default background of is actually transparent, but some particular formulas may have a background set manually. I will check its source next time I see a similar case.
Can be reproduced with wikitext <math>z^2 + 2az + b^2</math>
This bug's just weird. The white background appears if you've got two squared symbols in there, but disappears if you've got more or less than that.
It looks like, for certain specific math formulas, the server generates a PNG with a white background, instead of a transparent background. The bug should be directed towards the maintainers of the tool that generates the PNG image. I'm not sure if we can do much within the app to remedy this...
