Without the 'zend' role (the HHVM default), Apache has started giving me a 503 ("The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."). It works with the 'zend' role enabled. I'm not sure why. Please let me know if you have any debugging advice.
I would check /var/log/upstart/hhvm.log, /var/log/hhvm/error.log, and /var/log/apache2/error.log for clues.
Also, try running hhvm from command line.
It might have just been an out-of-memory. I'm going to mark WORKSFORME. I'm currently using HHVM successfully. But if I hit it again, I'll debug using those files and potentially reopen.
