To allow users to more quickly stay abreast of changes to an article (particularly if it covers a developing topic), they should be able to view the article page in a form that highlights any changes since a particular date, rather than only being able to to view un-rendered side-by-side markup diffs. There should be a time slider that allows a user to set the period of diffs that are highlighted, with the slider defaulting to either the time of the user's last visit to the article, or a reference point the user has set. This feature would enhance Mediawiki's support for a "read-state", which is particularly invaluable for wiki-journalism.

If I have to write the present feature myself, being able to look at the WikiTrust Extension highlighting code will be invaluable: https://github.com/collaborativetrust/WikiTrust
Planned to be implemented in an extension: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Diff_Highlighting_on_Article_Pages
